Moana Themes

Follow the complete movie timeline of Moana (2016) with every major event in chronological order. A “meta” version of the character appears with other Disney princesses and Elsa and Anna from Frozen (2013) in the Wreck-It Ralph (2012) sequel, Ralph Breaks the Internet (2018). When some of the princesses describe to Vanellope von Schweetz how they stare at “important water” to gain inspiration for their songs, Moana says she stares at the ocean. Later, when Ralph is falling from a tower and needs saving by the princesses, Moana causes water from a fountain to spiral upwards so that Elsa can freeze it into a slide to slow Ralph’s fall, saying “You’re Welcome” after saving him.

Sina also warns Moana that sometimes who they wish they could be is just not meant to be, referencing Moana’s love for the ocean while comforting her daughter. Maui tells Moana that he didn’t want her to come along with him to save Motufetu, because she might die. As they approach his storm, Nalo sends his giant eels to wreak havoc on Moana, with one managing to swallow Moni, and another damaging the sail of the raft. Finding a deserted island to beach the raft on and regroup, it is there that Moana finds the remains of Tautai Vasa’s raft, indicating that he and those with him were killed by Nalo before they could reach Motufetu. Her morale restored, and with Loto having repaired their raft with materials from Tautai Vasa’s, they head for Motufetu, with the plan being for Maui to raise the island, then Moana will touch it, breaking the curse. A thousand years later, the ocean chooses Moana, the daughter of Motunui’s chief Tui, to return the heart to Te Fiti.
Later, when Moana becomes chief, she and her father lead their people in voyaging across the seas, strengthening their relationship as her father finally lets go of his fear of traveling on the ocean. She mournfully confesses her incompetence and demands that the ocean chooses someone else to restore the heart. The ocean accepts Moana’s decision and takes the heart of Te Fiti back into the sea.

This caused Te Fiti to disintegrate, and Maui was attacked by Te Kā, a volcanic demon. The film’s conclusion underscores the importance of personal bravery and self-discovery. Moana, who begins her journey driven by curiosity, ends up becoming a leader and a symbol of her people’s future. The ocean’s refusal to return the heart directly to Te Fiti initially appears as a plot inconsistency, but it can be understood as a reflection of Te Fiti’s fiery, damaged state—she can’t touch water while in her corrupted form.
